Le mwbaApocinacee (mwbqApocynaceae mwbgmwbwJuss., mwca1789) sono una mwcqfamiglia di mwcgpiante mwcwangiosperme mwdadicotiledoni dell'mwdqordine mwdgGentianalescite-ref-powo-1-0[1]. La famiglia comprende prevalentemente mwewpiante succulente degli ambienti tropicali e subtropicali. In questa famiglia rientrano anche l'mwfaoleandro, la mwfqpervinca e la mwfgpomelia, specie comuni delle zone temperate.

Descrizione
I mwiwfiori, mwjaattinomorfi ed mwjqermafroditi, possiedono un mwjgcalice mwjwgamosepalo, cioè con mwkasepali fusi alla base in varia misura, e una mwkqcorolla mwkggamopetala imbutiforme, con la fauce provvista di appendici, che rappresentano una caratteristica distintiva della famiglia. L'mwkwandroceo è formato da 5 mwlastami, mentre il mwlqgineceo è costituito da 2 a 5 mwlgcarpelli saldati a formare un mwlwovario supero o semi-infero.

Polline
Il mwpgpolline delle Apocynaceae può presentarsi in forme di aggregazione diverse nelle varie mwpwsottofamiglie (vedi sotto mwqaTassonomia). Nelle maggior parte delle specie delle mwqqsottofamiglie mwqgRauvolfioideae e mwqwApocynoideae il polline si presenta aggregato in semplici strutture granulari, che prendono il nome di monadi (granuli singoli) o tetradi (granuli a gruppi di 4)cite-ref-3[3]cite-ref-4[4]cite-ref-5[5]. La maggior parte delle mwuaPeriplocoideae produce tetradi polliniche, presenti in numero di quattro per ogni mwuqantera; in alcuni generi (p.es. mwugmwuwDecalepis, mwvaEpistemma) le tetradi sono agglutinate a formare dei piccoli ammassi globulari (dette mwvgpollinii o pollinodii), simili a quelli descritti nelle mwvwOrchidaceae; tanto le tetradi che i pollinii sono esposti, dopo l'mwwaantesi, in strutture specializzate dette traslatori, costituite da una struttura di supporto a forma di cucchiaio munita di un disco adesivocite-ref-verhoeven-venter1998-6-0[6]cite-ref-verhoeven-venter2001-7-0[7]cite-ref-harder2008-8-0[8]. I fiori delle mwzqAsclepiadoideae producono cinque mwzgpollinari, ciascuno con due mwzwpollinii ricoperti da una membrana esterna; ciascun pollinio è connesso ad un corpuscolo a forma di gancio, che ne favorisce l'aggancio al corpo degli impollinatori.cite-ref-verhoeven-venter2001-7-1[7]cite-ref-harder2008-8-1[8] L'organizzazione del polline nei fiori delle mwcaSecamonoideae è molto simile a quella delle Asclepiadoideae, ma sono presenti quattro pollinii anziché due.cite-ref-verhoeven-venter2001-7-2[7]cite-ref-harder2008-8-2[8]
Ecologia
Alcuni mwewalcaloidi tossici (mwfacardenolidi) prodotti dalle Apocynaceae, sono utilizzati da alcuni mwfqlepidotteri e mwfgcoleotteri come metodo di difesa "chimica" contro gli aggressori. In questi mwfwinsetti, la mwgaproteina bersaglio dei cardenolidi, una mwgqpompa Na+/K+ ATP dipendente (ATPα), presenta una sequenza mwhaamminoacidica modificata, che consente all'animale il sequestro e l'accumulo della mwhqtossina all'interno dei propri tessuti, senza alcuna conseguenza.cite-ref-zhang-et-al-2012-9-0[9]
Tassonomia
La distinzione tra Apocynaceae e mwjaAsclepiadaceae, fino ad allora unite in un unico raggruppamento (mwjqApocineae mwjgJussieu, 1789), fu introdotta nel 1810 dal botanico inglese mwjwRobert Brown, sulla base della presenza, nel fiore delle Asclepiadaceae, di aggregati globulari di mwkapolline organizzati in mwkqpolliniicite-ref-10[10]. Tale distinzione è rimasta in uso per quasi 200 anni, ed è stata mantenuta anche dal mwlgSistema Cronquist (1988)cite-ref-cronquist-11-0[11], nonostante fosse divenuto evidente che, in base a molti altri caratteri morfologici, i mwmwtaxa più evoluti delle Apocynaceae siano più simili alle Asclepiadaceae di quanto non somiglino ai membri più "basali" della loro stessa famiglia.
Per arrivare a una classificazione più rispondente alle evidenze morfologiche, bisognerà aspettare i risultati dei primi studi con approccio mwnqfilogenetico, che porteranno nel 2000 alla pubblicazione di una revisione in cui le due famiglie vengono riunificate e suddivise in cinque mwngsottofamiglie: le due in cui tradizionalmente erano suddivise le Apocynaceae (mwnwRauvolfioideae e mwoaApocynoideae) e le tre delle Asclepiadaceae (mwoqPeriplocoideae, mwogSecamonoideae e mwowAsclepiadoideae)cite-ref-endress2000-12-0[12]. Le tre sottofamiglie principali vengono a loro volta suddivise in 17 mwqatribù: nove per le Rauvolfioideae (mwqqAlstonieae, mwqgVinceae, Willughbeieae, mwraTabernaemontaneae, Melodineae, Hunterieae, mwrwPlumerieae, mwsaCarisseae e Alyxieae), cinque per le Apocynoideae (Apocyneae, Echiteae, Malouetieae, Mesechiteae e Wrightieae) e tre per le Asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadeae, Ceropegieae e mwuqMarsdenieae). La mwugclassificazione APG II (2003) accoglie sostanzialmente queste acquisizioni, includendo nella famiglia Apocynaceae anche i generi in precedenza attribuiti alle Asclepiadaceaecite-ref-apgii-13-0[13].
Tra il 2000 e il 2007, vengono pubblicati numerosi studi basati sulla analisi degli mwwaacidi nucleici, che senza mettere in discussione l'impianto centrale della classificazione precedente, approfondiscono le relazioni intergeneriche e ridisegnano i confini tra le varie tribù e all'interno delle stessecite-ref-liede2001-14-0[14]cite-ref-meve2001-15-0[15]cite-ref-meve2002-16-0[16]cite-ref-meve2004a-17-0[17]cite-ref-meve2004b-18-0[18]cite-ref-potgieter2001-19-0[19]cite-ref-liede-t-uber2000-20-0[20]cite-ref-liede-t-uber2002-21-0[21]cite-ref-liede-meve2001-22-0[22]cite-ref-liede-meve2002-23-0[23]cite-ref-liede-kunze2002-24-0[24]cite-ref-liedeetal2002a-25-0[25]cite-ref-liedeetal2002b-26-0[26]cite-ref-liede-schumann2005-27-0[27]cite-ref-rapini2003-28-0[28]cite-ref-rapini2004-29-0[29]cite-ref-rapini2006-30-0[30]cite-ref-rapini2007-31-0[31]cite-ref-simoes2004-32-0[32]cite-ref-simoes2006-33-0[33]cite-ref-simoes2007-34-0[34]cite-ref-verhoeven2003-35-0[35]cite-ref-venter2006-36-0[36]cite-ref-meve-liede-schumann2007-37-0[37]cite-ref-goyder2007-38-0[38]cite-ref-ionta2007-39-0[39]cite-ref-lahaye2007-40-0[40]cite-ref-livshultz2007-41-0[41]cite-ref-wanntorp2007-42-0[42]. I risultati di questi studi vengono sistematizzati in una revisione di Endress et al. (2007)cite-ref-endress2007a-43-0[43], in cui viene ridefinita la collocazione di numerosi generi e vengono proposte quattro nuove tribùmwatk : Aspidospermeae tra le Rauvolfioideae, Baisseinae, Nerieae e Odontadenieae nelle Apocynoideae; all'interno delle Asclepiadoideae, vengono inoltre riconosciute 12 mwat4sottotribù (quattro in Ceropegieae e otto in Asclepiadeae), mentre la definizione delle sottotribù nelle Rauvolfioideae e nelle Apocynoideae rimane ancora incerta.
Tra il 2008 e il 2013 vengono ulteriormente approfondite le linee filogenetiche delle varie tribùcite-ref-lens2009-44-0[44]cite-ref-livshultz2010-45-0[45]cite-ref-simoes2010-46-0[46]cite-ref-fishbein2011-47-0[47]cite-ref-hechem2011-48-0[48]cite-ref-wanntorp2011-49-0[49]cite-ref-middleton2012-50-0[50]cite-ref-meve2012-51-0[51]cite-ref-liede-schumann2012-52-0[52]cite-ref-liede-schumann2013-53-0[53] e nel 2014 si arriva ad una nuova revisione tassonomica che suddivide le tre maggiori sottofamiglie in 25 tribù e 49 sottotribù (Endress 2014)cite-ref-endress2014-54-0[54].

• mwag0Utilizzo come piante ornamentali. Diverse specie delle Apocinacee possono essere coltivate nelle zone temperate a scopo ornamentale, in piena terra o in vaso, ma gradiscono l'esposizione al sole. Piante d'interesse ornamentale sono ad esempio quelle dei generi mwag4mwag8Adenium, mwahamwahePlumeria e mwahimwahmPachypodium, di origine tropicale, e lo stesso mwahqoleandro, di origine mediterranea.
• mwaiqFarmacologia. Molte Apocinacee sono ricche di mwaiualcaloidi, a volte di elevata tossicità, tali da essere considerate piante velenose. Molte specie sono oggetto di studio o di applicazione nell'ambito della botanica farmaceutica per le importanti proprietà di alcuni principi attivi. Di particolare interesse sono il mwaigmwaikCatharanthus roseus (Pervinca del Madagascar), specie endemica del mwaioMadagascar ma naturalizzata in molte regioni tropicali, le specie del genere mwaismwaiwStrophantus, la mwai0mwai4Rauvolfia serpentina. La pervinca del Madagascar contiene diverse decine di alcaloidi, alcuni dei quali trovano impiego per contrastare alcuni tumori, in particolare alcune forme di mwai8leucemia. Lo mwajimwajmStrophantus contiene alcaloidi ad azione cardiocinetica, utilizzati oggi come principio attivo puro per il trattamento dell'mwajqinsufficienza cardiaca. La mwajcmwajgRauwolfia serpentina contiene alcaloidi che possono avere azione mwajksedativa e mwajoipotensiva oppure mwajsvasodilatatrice e mwajwantispasmodica.
• mwakaAlimentazione. Alcune specie hanno impieghi alimentari nelle popolazioni africane. Fra queste si citano i frutti eduli delle mwakemwakiCarissa e dellmwakm'mwakqAcokanthera oblongifolia.
• mwakkUtilizzo come piante tessili. Alcune piante del genere mwakomwaksApocynum sono utilizzate per ricavare fibre tessili simili alla mwakwcanapa (mwak0Apocynum cannabinum o canapa del Canada, mwak8mwalaApocynum sibiricum o kendir).
